January 8, 2013......
This post is about our search for a "home away" in Rome. The decision to go to Rome was made last May. Our flights were booked (more on that later) so very early in the game (May 2012) we turned our minds to finding accommodation. Given we were going in the off season we didn't have too much problem locating lots of available apartments in Rome. We visited our favourite sites which we have used with success in the past - www.vrbo.com and www.homeaway.com. We filtered our query down to min. 2 bedrooms (you never know when you might have company) and set our maximum $(CAD) pm. We had decided that $2,500. pm was all that we wanted to spend. We also had a requirement that Wi-Fi be included (how else would we communicate) and that for both of us light (i.e. above ground with windows), furnishings (clean looking, comfortable), location and kitchen functionality were important. Given we were going to be long vs short stay, the prices indicated in the websites don't necessarily apply so I sent off about 84 enquiries for quotes and and to confirm availability....I received positive responses from most as to availability - not so good with respect to price. As with hotels, restaurants and shopping in Rome, apartment accommodations are expensive too. There were lots of places that had been hovelled together from basements or attics but mostly with the bare minimums for kitchens (i.e. couple of cupboards with a counter and hotplate or microwave (no ovens). We also wanted to have laundry facilities however have now learned that very few people have dryers - only washers. Electricity is very very expensive...
We were successful! Notwithstanding it was only a one bedroom, the apartment we decided on is on Via Giulia. What a perfect spot - close to everything. Outside of the building is pictured in my previous post but here follows some pictures of the interior of our Rome apartment!
Another view of the kitchen. Love that cutting board. Unit also has a dishwasher - wow, it must be tiny.
Another view of the entryway leading into the bedroom - again I like the separation. Makes the 700 sq. ft. seem larger...

One bathroom - facing inward from the bedroom. To the left is the shower and to the right are a toilet and bidet (almost wrote duvet...hahahaha). Photo is somewhat distorted due to face on view but you can see the side entrances reflected in the mirror.
This is our bedroom. We are hoping that this is a European King Size but the write-up (Homeaway #805761) indicates that this is a double bed. Looks like lots of storage - you can see our bathroom straight ahead.
Doorway leads to entry and our bedroom. I like that there is a door between the two. Smallish TV. Apartment includes computer (but we'll bring our own) and a printer (that's a nice bonus). It is very white but apparently that is necessary. Most recent review indicates the apartment doesn't have much natural light - perhaps that's why the lights are on?
This is it - the centre of our lives. Very tiny, very compact but believe me, it's way better than many we looked at. Write-up indicates that there is a refrigerator and freezer - so I'm assuming they're under counter.
Another view of the kitchen. Love that cutting board. Unit also has a dishwasher - wow, it must be tiny.
Anyone notice Marilyn Munroe? Kinda like the decor. Clean looking and simple. Seems there are windows and they look big and bright to me. One of the couches is a pull out. If you happen to be coming to Rome, we'd love to have you come and stay.
This is the entryway and if it looks as represented in this picture I love it. Look at all those cupboards. Nice to have lots of storage to keep things neat and tidy. I wonder if the clothes washing machine is in there. It says there is one in the unit.

View of the eating area from the living room.
Well there you have it. If you'd like to see more and read the reviews you can always visit HomeAway Listing #805761 - can't hardly wait!
